Columbia SABRLions

We’re the Columbia University Society for Baseball Researchs analytics team that supports the varsity baseball program. Our team is built of 20+ undergraduate and graduate students who build tools to help the Columbia University baseball team win.

While it’s nothing new for a college baseball team to have an analytics program, it’s more rare for the program to consist of a half-dozen players. Together, we’re building player-driven solutions to some of baseball’s most complex questions.

Our Mission:

Advanced statistical models and tools are valuable. In fact, they’re necessary to survive in today’s college game.

But they’re only useful in how they can be applied to practice planning and game strategy.

Baseball analytics faces a fundamental issue: front offices’ data solutions are not easily usable by coaches and players.

The main reason behind this is that data solutions are often delivered in confusing, overwhelming, and inapplicable vehicles. This is because the data scientists behind these products aren’t baseball players themselves. And often, baseball players don’t have a background in data science to understand these complex data.

The result? A standoff between the “nerds” upstairs and the team on the field.

Columbia is uniquely positioned as a program of high-academic athletes with professional aspirations to figure out how to close the gap between a model collecting dust and actually impacting the outcome of games.

Through our partnership with the Columbia Lions D1 Baseball Team, we're committed to providing insights to assist on-field performance while simultaneously providing undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in sports and data analytics.
